Pyrite
decay |
Originally this was a beautiful and exceptionally preserved fish nodule. After several years in a damp or humid atmosphere the pyritic core of this nodule shattered the nodule into several pieces. The outer bone was also affected because all fossil bone from the London clay of Sheppey contains pyrite as part of the mineralisation process. - (specimen now in the collection of Fred Clouter) |
